“OpenSound Control (“OSC”) is a protocol for communication among computers, sound synthesizers, and other multimedia
devices that is optimized for modern networking technology. OSC has achieved wide use in the field of computer-based new
interfaces for musical expression for wide-area and local-area networked distributed music systems, inter-process communication, and even within a single application.”
We’ve used OSC for communication between Touch Designer and Max/MSP as it far superior to other forms of communication such as MIDI. With OSC we can create complex networks between many computers using standard networking hardware. For extirpation Adam will be tracking movements of the participants in the gallery use that data to determine the overall health of the system. This ‘health’ data will be sent via OSC into the Touch Designer computer and also to the sound computer. In addition, this ‘health’ data will also control a display showing the ‘footprint’ that people leave through their interactions in the site. Importantly OSC allows us high resolution channels, essential for things like position, which Jason will use to directly affect the behaviour of the grass and butterflies.
Here’s a diagram showing the osc data flow in our network.
